K1 Curriculum Outline

MATHEMATICS

 

Aim:               To sensitise children to numbers, shapes and colours around them.

 

Objectives:   –            to enable students to trace, write the numbers and associate them with objects.

                              –            to enable students to associate shapes and colours.

                              –            to enable students to count.

 

–           counting 1-100

–           sand paper numbers 1 – 20

–           numbers 1 – 20

–           colours

–           flat and 3 dimensional shapes – triangle, square, diamond, circle, oval, etc.

 

LANGUAGE ARTS

 

Aim:               For children to develop oral and language skills in order to accomplish certain tasks.

 

Objectives:   –            to enable children to be cognisant of their names

                       –            to enable students to learn the alphabet/capital and common

                       –            to identify and recognise the letters and associate them with their sounds

                       –            to learn to identify certain words and read simple sentences

                       –            to be able to trace letters and words

                       –            to help children to write words

 

–           name card

–           alphabet

–           vowels

–           reading/vocabulary

–           tracing and writing

 


SCIENCE

Aim:               For children to be more aware of the things around them.

 

Objectives:   –            to enable students to be aware of how living things grow

                       –            the benefits of a healthy environment

                       –            to be able to name the body parts

                       –            to be able to identify animals and their sounds

                       –            to know the five senses and how we use them

SOCIAL STUDIES

–          Jamaica

–           National Symbols/Anthem/Pledge/

–           Heroes/Heroine

–           Airports inJamaica

PRACTICAL LIFE

Aim:               To enable students to develop their social skills, to have a sense of self worth and to develop their physical/motor skills

 

Objectives:   –            to enable students to build their fine motor skills

                       –            to enable students to be helpful

                       –            to enable students to be independent

                       –            to enable students to develop their fine thinking skills

                       –            to enable students to learn to share with each other

 

–           grasping things

–           sponge – squeezing

–           cleaning a desk

–           carrying a chair

–           cutting paper

–           sorting of objects

–           pouring water using a funnel

–           carrying a tray

–           buttoning, shoe lacing

 

EARLY WORK

–           concepts are reinforced developing children’s motor skills by doing colouring, putting puzzles together, creating with playdough and reading storybooks.

 

 

CIRCLE TIME

 

Aim:               To develop language skills and social interaction

 

Objectives:   –            to enable students to socialize with each other

                       –            to enable students to speak freely

                       –            to enable students to do the activity, show and tell.

–           discussions on the weather, calendar and sing related songs

–           Bible stories

–           greeting songs

–           nursery rhymes

–           news (good)
