Principal’s end of year letter 2010

25 June 2010

Dear Parents, Students, Faculty and Friends of St Hugh’s Preparatory School,

I cannot quite believe that we have reached the end of the 2009-2010 academic year. This year has
been action-packed – full of changes, accomplishments and events.

Our students represented the School in the JIS talk on Nutrition and Health, the launch of the Heart
Fund Run, the RJR Child’s Month interview, a workshop on conservation and renewable energy
sponsored by the PCJ, the JCDC Gospel and Parish Festivals, the Inter Prep School Football
Competition, Burger King Tennis Tournament, the Jamaica Amateur Gymnastics Competition, the Prep
Schools’ Champs for Track and Field, the Chess Prep/Primary School Championships, the Kiwanis Club,
the Haiti Relief drive, the Palisadoes Beach Clean-Up, the NEPA environment function and the Earth
Day Launch at Hope Gardens. Our students made us proud and represented us well.

Our grade six students, with the help of their teachers and parents, prepared for and did well on their
GSAT exams. They achieved personal bests in each of the subject areas and made us all proud. We
wish our graduates all the best as they move on to high school and continue to shine. We also thank
them for their contribution of a white board to the grade six classroom.

Our teachers embraced the use of technology in the classroom. They used their laptops and the
School’s projectors to present the subject matter in a different way. They provided hands-on, creative
activities as well as traditional paper and pencil exercises to engage the students in their lessons. They
attended workshops on the new Early Childhood MOE Curricula, Mathematics, Health and Family
Education, ADHD, Differentiation, Inclusion and Empowering Boys to Succeed. Our teachers gave of
themselves inside and outside of the classroom to encourage the children to be the best that they
could be.

Our parents for each of the classes have also contributed greatly by donating much needed resources,
refurbishing, furniture, white boards and classroom teaching aids. Through the PTA, our parents also
helped to improve the facility by refurbishing the bathrooms. They have also committed to assist the
School with necessary roof repairs. Our parents worked as team players with the teachers, supporting
their children and ensuring that they got the most out of their education. Parents, please continue
this support by encouraging your children to learn over the summer: make sure that they read for half
an hour each day, practice their times tables from grade 2 upwards, and provide them with
opportunities to explore, experience and enjoy the world around them.

I would like to extend a hearty ‘thank you’ to all of the St Hugh’s family members who helped to make
my first year at the School productive, rewarding and enlightening. I have appreciated very much your
efforts to make me feel a part of the St Hugh’s family.

I wish you all a restful and enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing you in September.

Yours,
Abby Wynter, MA MEd., Principal
